A Medical Massage Therapist is a licensed massage therapist (LMT) who treats health conditions diagnosed by a doctor. They have advanced training and experience that allows them to provide care focused on healing injuries, improving function, or increasing circulation. Medical Massage Therapists work closely with prescribing doctors to treat patients who are affected by pain, illness, or injury. Their work has the specific goal to alleviate pain and treat health conditions such as neuropathy, cancer, fibromyalgia, soft tissue injuries, or even high blood pressure.
Medical massage is outcome-based and goal oriented. It includes a treatment plan that is used to treat a specific medical condition and is usually prescribed by a Doctor.
Medical massage therapy is performed as part of a healthcare provider’s overall treatment plan, so the massage therapy is typically concentrated on a specific medical diagnosis. The exact techniques and procedures that are used during this type of massage will vary by patient. However, the massage will typically be centralized on the parts of the body that have been identified as an area of concern. Instead of massaging the entire body, medical massage therapy tends to focus on a particular area.
Your Medical Massage Treatment Plan Will Include:
Full medical consultation to determine goals and treatment
Assessments/evaluations to determine treatment plans and track progress
Thorough medical notes to track progress towards treatment goals
Health insurance reimbursement assistance*
If you are planning to seek health insurance reimbursement - YES
If you will not be using health insurance for your sessions - NO
Medical Massage Therapists do not have the legal ability to diagnose a patient with a condition. In order to claim that a medical treatment is being provided for a specific condition, a prescription must come from a healthcare provider. The prescription could come from a general practitioner, chiropractor, neurologist, orthopedist, oral surgeon, psychiatrist, or any medical professional with the ability to diagnose.
We DO accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards. A prescription is recommended for your records.
We DO NOT currently bill health insurance providers directly.
We DO assist in requesting health insurance reimbursement.
If you would like to be reimbursed by your health insurance provider for medical massage treatment, please contact your provider to verify coverage prior to scheduling your first appointment. Once coverage is confirmed, you will need a prescription from your doctor, including an ICD-10 code (diagnosis code) and treatment plan. We will provide you with a medical super bill that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
